Role of a Migration Agent
The most crucial responsibilities of a Migrant Agent are to:
- Listen to what a client wants to achieve
- Advise if the objective is achievable now or in the future
- Navigate the client through the relevant visa categories
- Advise the advantages & disadvantages of potential visa options
- Ensure the client understands any conditions which attach to particular visas
- Ensure the client is made aware of related issues which may impact on potential visa options eg taxation, property purchase, health insurance, education costs, superannuation (pension) portability
- Advise the client to first seek specific professional advice in those related areas, if applicable
- Advise if there are no visa options for which the client is eligible
Once a decision has been reached as to a particular visa option, a Registered Migration Agent should:
- Provide an Engagement Letter confirming instructions and the fees and charges applicable
- Advise visa application forms, supporting documents, health screening & police clearances required, as applicable
- Set out timelines to be observed
A Migration Agent becomes a client’s link to the DIAC throughout the visa process and should keep the client informed promptly of any relevant communications from the DIAC.
In summary, engaging the services of a Registered Migration Agent can:
- Prevent the choice of an incorrect visa category
- Offer options which may not have been previously known
- Raise awareness of ancillary issues to be considered
- Streamline the visa application process
- Communicate with DIAC on behalf of the client
